I often get asked if I am a beer snob or wine snob. If my refusing to sacrifice quality in my beverages makes me a snob, then yes, yes I am a beer and wine snob. My job makes it easier for me to be selective in the things I choose to drink, and for that I am both lucky and thankful. However, I find there is a difference between wine and beer snobbery.
Wine snobs get a bad rap for being elitists, white collar rich types and those that do not associate themselves as such tend to poke fun at the stereotype of a fine wine lover. Whereas the beer snobs often referred to as beer geeks are more generally associated with a younger more blue collar, hipster vibe. I find it ironic when I am talking with a beer snob who will not sacrifice their quality of beer, but are ok with a $4 bottle of wine, and on the flip side I have found a wine lover pick up a nice $40 bottle of cab, but then in the same trip will buy an 18 pack of macro brew. I am sure the AVV team does a great job of making friends wherever they sell their wines. It would not be hard to do with this group, but here in the Space City, there is a special bond with these folks. I have had the pleasure of meeting and dealing with this winery staff from Hank down to the local rep, and I cannot speak too much more highly of these folks or you might think I was being paid. So, we will now move onto the cool collection of Zinfandels they produce. The weekend of Zins, so that you can have Temptation on Friday, Sin Saturday, and Redemption on Sunday. Continue reading »

Michael David winery could be likened to Babe Ruth of Lodi California, because it seems as though this winery is always hitting homeruns. Brothers Michael & David Phillips are at the front of the pack in this fast rising AVA. I have enjoyed the wines they have brought to the market thus far, and look forward to what the future holds.
6th Sense Syrah (2012)
Score: 92
Beautiful ruby red. This wine comes from 30 year old vine from clippings snuck into the US from Rhone. Great fruit character without being jammy. Excellent spice backbone. This wine retails for about $15 and I think it is hard to find many wines that are a better bargain! It’s amazing that this gem is hidden so well in their portfolio.
Earthquake Cab (2012)
Score: 90
Here is just another well made Cab from MD. This is could easily be the best wine in many portfolios, yet it scores closer to the bottom of theirs in my opinion. You get French oak, medium to full body, and an elegant finish. Delightful.
