Thebeerandwineguy Drinks: Michael David Winery: Part 1

Michael David winery could be likened to Babe Ruth of Lodi California, because it seems as though this winery is always hitting homeruns. Brothers Michael & David Phillips are at the front of the pack in this fast rising AVA. I have enjoyed the wines they have brought to the market thus far, and look forward to what the future holds.

6th Sense Syrah (2012)

Score: 92

Beautiful ruby red. This wine comes from 30 year old vine  from clippings snuck into the US from Rhone. Great fruit character without being jammy. Excellent spice backbone. This wine retails for about $15 and I think it is hard to find many wines that are a better bargain! It’s amazing that this gem is hidden so well in their portfolio.

Earthquake Cab (2012)

Score: 90

Here is just another well made Cab from MD. This is could easily be the best wine in many portfolios, yet it scores closer to the bottom of theirs in my opinion. You get French oak, medium to full body, and an elegant finish. Delightful.

Rapture Cabernet Sauvignon (2012)

Score: 92

This reminds me of a raspberry chocolate truffle dusted with espresso. It is a lush, mellow drinking Cab that can be enjoyed in your finest glass, or a red solo cup. Yes, it is that good, plus who has time for being proper when in the middle of the Rapture?

7 Deadly Zins (2012)

Score: 88

A classic! This everyday table Zinfandel is always bargain priced. It explodes with ripe fruit notes and is complimented with a nice amount of spice. This is a new label, but the same great quality as MD have always put into this Zin.

Earthquake Petite Sirah (2012)

Score: 92

This wine is big, it is bold , and it will leave a lasting impression on you. I happen to love this wine. The over the top, in your face tannins and deep plum flavors are the base of this great wine. I am hooked.

Earthquake Zinfandel (2012)

Score: 90

Purple teeth guarantee! A big brother to the 7 Deadly Zin, this is a bigger, more jammy style Zin that California has become famous for. Pair this with your favorite rack of ribs and life will not get much better.
