Karbach may be barely three years old, but they have come on the scene in a very big way. I feel like I have been drinking Karbach my whole life. If you live in Houston and are not familiar with this brewery, then you are living under a rock. I recently got to spend a little time with Eric and Blake of Karbach and go over some of their portfolio and, as the saying goes… the rest was blurry.

Love Street Summer – 7.5
Kolsch-Style
ABV: 4.9
IBU: 20
Ahhh. I smack my lips in anticipation of this crisp summer seasonal. It is one of my favorite ways to endure the long, hot Texas summer. I have heard dirty rumors that this beer could move from their seasonal lineup and become a year round brew. This delights me and will make it immediately become my crawfish beer.

Weisse Versa Wheat – 8.3
ABV: 5.3
IBU: 20
With this little gem being produced in Houston, it should replace any beer taps that are dedicated to an introductory wheat beer. The banana and coriander are true to style and give this well balanced brew its easily approachable style. I especially like this beer when I am at The Mezzanine Lounge eating their stuffed jalapenos they call Grasshoppers.

Sympathy for the Lager – 8.0
ABV: 4.9
IBU: 45
Yuengling of Houston? Well, this beer does not have that cult following, but it’s a damned fine lager that I feel does not get enough credit. As soon as I get my draft system in my house, this will be the first keg I tap.

Weekend Warrior – 8.5
Pale Ale
ABV: 5.5
IBU: 40
The citrus and hop on the front of this beer followed by a slight malt finish screams street tacos to me. The 5 different hops are structured just right in this one. If this beer doesn’t come with a good time guarantee, it should. It really has everything you want in a beer. *Music not included.

Hopadillo – 9.0
IPA
ABV: 6.6
IBU: 65
You bitter bro? This beer sure is! While this beer will not go down as the dankest beers ever created, it is a staple for the hop heads in Houston, and rightfully so. Six different hops go into this beer and it is also dry hopped, giving you that beautiful aroma.

El Hopadillo Negro – 8.8
Black IPA
ABV: 7.2
IBU: 80
This beer is wicked. Aromas of citrus fruit hit you first, rushing at you all IPA like, then it crop dusts your pallet with a lingering malty finish of coffee. Open this bad boy up with a slow smoked pork loin with some rice and pan gravy. Just don’t forget my invite!

Rodeo Clown – 9.5
Double IPA
ABV: 9.5
IBU: 85
Ironic is the name, because this beer is not clowning around. Eric and the brew team really have this one figured out. There is a lot of hop, a lot of malt and incredible balance. The thing that makes this beer special is the consistency. This beer must be why this brewery is one of the fastest growing in the nation.

F.U.N. 007 Hellfighter – 9.6
Imperial Porter Ale aged on Bourbon Barrels
ABV: 11
IBU: 85
I was shocked when they pulled this out. A true delight by any definition. This has been aging a while now; the nose smelled of melted tootsie rolls and was fan-freaking-tastic! Drinking, correction *sipping* this was like sipping on a fine Port Wine with notes of raisin. It had a beautiful dark chocolate finish that left me only needing more. It was roll over and go straight to sleep good.

We have a lot of fun here at Space City Nerd, but we also like to mix doing good with the fun things that we do. You may have heard us talk about Extra Life or have even helped us with the event last year. What’s Extra Life you ask? Think about running a 5K for charity. You know, the one where you have your friends and family donate to a great cause for you to run. Now replace running with 24 hours of video games! It’s not as easy as it looks.

Tired, hungry, without a guest to guide the ship, the full crew of Jesus, Rex, Ryan and Sean venture out to the unknown and end up talking about Pokken, Service Merchandise, the Simpsons, eating old food and finally….Rex’s 10 minute drunken rant over Dustin Diamond AKA Screech from “Saved By the Bell”. This one is definitely NSFW!

This weekend the Amazing Comic Con show comes to Houston. The convention has been around for a couple of years existing in other cities such as Las Vegas, Phoenix and Los Angeles. While we’ve had a major growth in the number of conventions nationwide, Amazing aims to quench the thirst of comic fans. Here, the goal is to show everyone where today’s pop culture scene started. While we already have a number of amazing conventions (Comicpalooza, Anime Matsuri, Houston Con, Oni-Con amongst others), I believe we still have room for others. Cities like Dallas and Austin have entered a phase where every weekend there is a major con that embraces the whole spectrum of pop culture, to me that lessens the chances that a guest you would like to see will be selected to appear. Houston is a bit different, while the city’s major con season has two anime conventions as book ends, they’re far enough apart to not clash with each other. What we have in between them is pretty awesome. For pop culture, we have Comicpalooza; for a fangroup/science fiction focus, we have The Houston Con. Amazing’s place is to be our resource for everything comics.
Looking at the guest list, I managed to sum up my excitement with one image:
 Marvel.com
The cover to X-Men #1 was done by the one and only Jim Lee. I remember having a “career day” in 4th grade where we had to dress up as what we wanted to be when we grew up, and I took a picture from Wizard magazine that Jim Lee was in and emulated his attire as best as I could, added a Marvel Comics logo I cut out to my shirt pocket, and called myself a comic book artist. That’s how pumped I am for this. Now let’s focus a bit more on the cover, one of the most prominent figures on that gatefold is Wolverine. As much as people say he’s overused, there is a certain charm to him that made him become Marvel’s top character. Going back to “ye olde schoole days”, I was that kid that stuck pencils between his fingers and pretended to have claws. That brings us to Len Weine and Herb Trimpe. This duo created Wolverine and had him debut in Incredible Hulk 180/181, he may not have been the ‘bub we know now, but they helped mold him to burst out on the scene in Giant Size X-Men #1. Wolverine is also present through another guest, Joe Rubenstein. He inked Frank Miller’s Wolverine series that gave Wolverine the “I’m a badass attitude”.
Another guest that adds on to the X-Men legacy is Scott Lobdell, his Age of Apocalypse storyline tripped everybody out with alternate versions of Homo Superior. See Cyclop’s pouches on the cover? Well the man that evolved those pouches will be there as well, Rob Liefeld. Responsible for Cable and the one Marvel character that’s everywhere nowadays, Deadpool.
I could easily play “six degrees of X-Men #1” but to keep it short, it’s not all about the nostalgia factor nor is it all about Marvel. Most of the artists and writers mentioned above continue to work and create the stories that you ask your LCS to pull for you every week. Even those that are creating foundations for new legacy stories will be there, creators such as Tom Scioli, Brian Buccelatto, Chad Hardin, Mat Nastos, and many others.
And last but not least, Houston’s own Terry Moore will be appearing. While he may be a hometown guy, it is incredibly difficult to see him in a con setting. +500 SCN points* for Francine and Katchoo cosplay!
There is much more info, VIP opportunities and guest details to read on the Amazing Houston Comic-Con website, and check out our interview with Amazing’s head honcho, Jimmy Jay, on the SCN podcast!
*we have no idea what SCN Points will get you…but if you do come dressed as Francine or Katchoo, we’ll probably buy you a drink and high five you!
