Thebeerandwineguy at Untapped Fest

I had the pleasure of getting to go to the Houston Untapped Festival this year. This is an outdoor festival showcasing numerous craft beers, and some really good indie music. The wildly unpredictable Houston weather had the first laugh as it was rained out on the original date, but it was the Untapped Fest who had the last laugh when it rescheduled for a month later. The weather was great!

Untapped Houston 2014

Set on Houston’s beautiful downtown oasis that is Discovery Green Park, the Festival began with a line forming to get in just before the festival opened. I snuck in a little early to see the set up and chat up a few friends. I even tried a couple nice local offerings from Fort Bend Brewing. If you have not tried the Phat Dj IPA and the Pumpkin Porter, you should. As the gates opened and the crown came in, everything seemed to flow very smoothly. The music started, and me and my team were off to try some beer and mingle with the crowd.

The beer lineup was excellent! The kings of the court in my opinion was Saint Arnold who brought out their Bishops Barrel series and staggered out the entire line up 1-7 as the day progressed. They were not the only ones who brought out special releases for the event… Firestone Walker, Stone, and Buffalo Bayou were just a few of the others that I saw bringing out the rare beers. The selection was vast and had something to offer everyone who enjoys craft beer.

The Music was not to be over shadowed here either. A few times I would find myself in front of one of the two stages jamming out, and almost forgetting about the beer festival going on around me.

The festival set up the food area away from the beer tents in an area with places to relax, sip your beer, and eat. All within earshot of the music, but not so loud you couldn’t talk to a friend. There were also a couple games of bean bag toss going on under some shade.

As festivals go, this one was very well done. A great place to bring your dog, and get to chum it up with beer nerds, brewery reps, and many brewers themselves were out there having a great time. The excellent music and beer selections were in complete harmony with the beautiful ambience. To top it all off, there were enough port-o-potties that I never had to wait for one to open up and they were clean! I would highly recommend this festival to anyone looking to try a beer festival.

I honestly don’t know how I managed to keep the camera straight as I downed enjoyed a series of amazing beers. Many thanks to the folks at Untapped for having Space City Nerd over this amazing festival. Many thanks to my camera gear for not getting mad at me after accidentally spilling  beer on them. BREAK TEH SPEEL: Going Fast and Dying Lots in DURNGEN RUNNAR

durngen

If you’re looking to spend the weekend with a punishing action game along the lines of I Wanna Be The Guy or Super Meat Boy you need to give DURNGEN RUNNAR a go. Created in RPG Maker(!) by local dev/artist James Hickey for our Summer of RPG Maker Game Jam, Durngen Runner is a straight-up masocore speed-run challenge in which players must navigate increasingly complex mazes filled with all sorts of devious enemies and traps. The game is straight punishing in the best way possible; for a twitch game made in an engine that isn’t meant for that sort of thing the controls are incredibly tight and, like the best games of its genre, dying never feels cheap and you’ll never feel like the game mechanics are fighting against you. I got to talk to James about the process of making an action game (soundtrack and everything) in a two-month time span in an engine suited more to slow-paced games with lots of cinemas and random, turn-based battles.

Thebeerandwineguy Drinks: Brooklyn Brewery

48_LagerLogo

I have been in the beer game long enough to become rather familiar with Brooklyn Brewery. Having a chance to sit down and explore this brewery on a more in depth level with Brooklyn Rep extraordinaire Jill was awesome. This Brewery has been doing this longer than most and has something to offer everyone.  Getting  reacquainted with these beers has been awesome, and I now look forward to keeping these around more often.

48_LagerLogo      Brooklyn Lager     8.4

IBU: 30

ABV: 5.2

So, I must be honest… I wanted to give this beer a higher score, because this beer and I have history together. It was my first Craft Beer, and I have a fond memories of this beer turning me from an adolescent beer drinker into a real man. The beer is smooth with a crisp finish. It is not the best beer that I drink, but it  is a good lager, and I will continue to keep this in my rotation.

578_Oktober      Brooklyn Oktoberfest     8.7

IBU: 25

ABV: 5.5

This is a hidden gem in the world of American Oktoberfest beers. A throwback to the old world on this one, they do not add those fall spices we see all too often in fall seasonal brews. They work with farmers in Bavaria who farm an heirloom malt specifically for Brooklyn. If you are in search of a very good, true Marzen, then check this one out.

74_PumpkinAle-6    Brooklyn Post Road Pumpkin     8.0

IBU: 24

ABV: 5.0

As we see with some breweries, Brooklyn has two fall seasonal brews, the second of which is the Pumpkin Ale. Brooklyn uses real pumpkin puree in their recipe. There are some notes nutmeg and other fall spices. While their first fall seasonal is an old world throwback, this Pumpkin Ale is more what the mainstream American consumer is asking for each fall. Nice beer, but a little underwhelming.

932_Pilsner Low Res Brooklyn Pilsner     8.6

IBU: 33

ABV: 5.1

Straw colored with a nice creamy head. This started off like a creamy biscuit, and finished crisp and slightly bitter. Classic Pilsner

54_EastIndiaLogo Brooklyn East IPA     8.8

IBU: 47

ABV: 6.9

This is an English style IPA. The nose was super clean. A nice malty body with a hint of hops sitting pleasantly on top of the pallet. This beer paired nicely with the hummus plate at Cottonwood. It is a beer that I have not had in a couple years, but I will be revisiting again very soon.

1153_halfale_logo

Brooklyn 1/2 Ale     8.6

IBU:

ABV: 3.4

This beer was a little unique. It’s unfiltered and pours with a pretty straw color and rapid bubbles  forming a nice head. The finish had this hint of bubble gum and hop mixture that I found very interesting. This beer is a fantastic sessionable beer, great for brunch!

675_SORACHI LOGO NEW_72
Sorachi Ace     8.9

IBU: 34

ABV: 7.6

Medium Cloudiness, notes of lemon grass. The beer finishes dry and would pair very well with “fatty” foods like a creamy cheese or salmon.

Print
Brooklyn Brown Ale     8.8

IBU: 30

ABV: 5.6

The ruby red color sits nicely in the glass, giving the appearance that one might be sophisticated. The taste does not let this brew down. It has both nutty and chocolate notes.

Local 2 Logo

Local 2     8.8

IBU:

ABV:

This Belgian style strong dark ale mimics an Abbey Dubbel, but with notes of orange peel. Fruit, not sweet, on the front and a dry finish.

595_Cuvee Noir Logo
Brooklyn Cuvee Noir     9.2

Part of the BQE (Brooklyn Quarterly Experiment) series. This is an Imperial Stout made with a Belgian yeast and put into Bourbon Barrels, then bottle fermented. Bourbon & vanilla on the nose with a dry finish hosted by slight chocolate notes.

67_blackchocolatestout-6 Black Chocolate Stout (2012)     9.2

IBU: 51

ABV: 10

Beautiful chocolate aroma on the nose, port like raisin finish. Reminded me of chocolate covered raisins start to finish.

70_MONSTER-6 Monster Ale (2012)     9.0

IBU:

ABV: 10.2

This is a beer I had never come across before, and is out of production. It’s a delicious Barleywine that is super smooth and not a big, punch you in the face Alcohol bomb.

Local 1 8.7580_Local 1

IBU: 26

ABV: 9.0

This strong ale is beautifully golden. Nice action from the bottle fermentation. Nice head sits on top of this delicious brew.

Fun Fund! – An Interview with Paradigm Developer Jacob Janerka

paradigm1

Hello Space City Nerds! My name is Hansel Moreno and I am a guest columnist here to talk to you about Jacob Janerka and his wonderful and hilarious point and click game Paradigm.

Paradigm has a demo available now and is currently fundraising on Kickstarter. You can play your way through two short scenes and meet some of the not-so-sane cast of this game to learn the basic mechanics and the deluxe-sized comedy Mr. Janerka is brewin’ up.

In the game you play as a horribly mutated test tube baby that was dumped in the woods and somehow survived… and then grew up to make the sickest beats anyone has ever heard.

While messing around one day on his computer (located in a nuclear facility) he learns that it has malfunctioned and will need new parts if he wants to make new jams and not let a whole bunch of land become even more radioactive.

I had the pleasure of a short interview with Jacob. Below is our Q&A about gaming and game making. Continue reading »
